Google announced in August 2024 that it would integrate a third-party app into its AI application, Gemini. By linking with WhatsApp, users can create messages in the AI app and send them in the messenger using only voice commands. Now, Google is taking the next step by integrating a second external app into Gemini: Spotify.
According to reports, the feature has already been rolled out to some users. You can link your Spotify account with your Gemini account. For Spotify, you need a premium subscription, while a free Gemini account should suffice. However, you need to set the language to English in the Android app.
To activate the feature on your smartphone, open the Gemini app and switch the language to English. You can find this option in the settings by tapping on your profile picture. After that, the app restarts. Tap your profile picture again and select “Extensions.” Spotify should appear as a service if you have been granted access. Usually, Google provides its current Pixel smartphones with new features first, so some Gemini users may have to wait.
Once the function is available and the accounts are connected, you can play specific songs, albums, or playlists on Spotify using voice or text commands. You can also ask Gemini to play music that fits a particular situation or activity. For example, if you want motivating music for jogging, Gemini can access suitable playlists. Additionally, you can dictate snippets of song lyrics for Gemini to find the corresponding song.
However, there are some limitations. The new Gemini feature can only be used in the Android app for now. It does not work in the web version or the iOS app. Additionally, you cannot ask Gemini to create a playlist for you or access Spotify radios for specific artists.
As Google continues to expand the capabilities of its Gemini app, users can expect more integrations and features in the future. For now, the integration with Spotify offers a convenient way to control music playback using AI technology.
