AI and Cybercrime: Rising Threats to Mac Security

The security situation on Mac devices has worsened significantly in recent months due to artificial intelligence and a growing service business of cybercriminals. This conclusion comes from an annual cybersecurity report by Moonlock Lab, a laboratory specializing in the discovery of new malware and system vulnerabilities. Moonlock Lab is part of the Ukrainian software company MacPaw, which also develops antivirus software.

According to the report, AI chatbots like ChatGPT enable people without any programming skills to develop malware. The report includes screenshots from the darknet, showing a user who used the OpenAI chatbot to program malware that steals cryptocurrency from a Mac. Previously, programming skills were a barrier for criminals wanting to create their own malware. Now, there is a decentralization of cybercrime, which is concerning.

Additionally, there is a trend where those with programming skills offer their malware as a service. Malware-as-a-Service (MaaS) is available for around $1500 per month, whereas developing malware used to cost tens of thousands of euros. The increasing competition is driving prices down. Developers of such malware have found a way to generate income without getting directly involved.

Adware, which displays unwanted advertisements, dominates Mac malware statistics with a 73% share, according to Moonlock Lab’s data. The fastest development has been observed in data theft. Ransomware has only been detected in 0.01% of antivirus software detections on private users’ devices.

The biggest vulnerability is human behavior. Social engineering, where people are manipulated into doing something or giving away information, is the main attack method observed. Known behavior recommendations include being cautious with downloads from unknown sources and being skeptical of system dialogs asking for passwords. Users should also keep their systems as up-to-date as possible.

Cybercriminals are targeting cryptocurrency companies with new macOS malware. Users are advised to stay informed and vigilant to protect themselves from these evolving threats.
