Apple’s AI feature “Intelligence” is facing criticism. iOS users can no longer view news summaries from this feature. Due to recent significant errors, Apple has disabled it for all messaging and entertainment apps.
Instead of just summarizing news, Intelligence sometimes presented them in a distorted way, causing confusion and frustration. For example, the AI recently reported that two SpaceX missions were successful even before they started.
In another incident, the BBC filed an official complaint. A summary of a BBC report about the murder of the CEO of US health insurer United Healthcare incorrectly stated that the suspect committed suicide.
Reporters Without Borders also criticized Apple. In response to the false suicide report, the NGO called generative AI services “a threat to the public’s right to reliable information on current events.”
The British National Union of Journalists even urged Apple to completely discontinue the AI feature. They stated, “In a time when access to accurate reporting is more important than ever, the public should not be put in a position to doubt the accuracy of the news they receive.”
For Apple, discontinuing the feature is not an option. The company told the US news website Axios, “We are working on improvements and will provide them in a future software update.”
After the update, texts summarized by Intelligence will be clearly marked. However, experts doubt that the underlying problem can be solved with an update.
This is because the underlying Large Language Models work with probabilities and are unable to truly understand content.
Google’s new AI search has also faced issues. This highlights the broader challenges that AI technologies face in delivering accurate information.
As AI continues to develop, ensuring the reliability and accuracy of the information it provides remains a critical concern.
For those interested in software and development news, staying updated with the latest advancements and challenges in AI is important.
