In 2025, AI like ChatGPT is expected to become more “agent-like”. This means it will be able to perform useful tasks on the web and services for users. The macOS version of OpenAI’s client is moving in this direction. With the latest update, available on Apple Silicon machines running macOS 14, ChatGPT can access more programs.
The feature is currently in beta and can be activated through the settings menu. You can enable it by toggling “Enable Work with Apps”. In another submenu, “Manage Apps”, you can decide what permissions to give ChatGPT. Currently supported programs include Apple’s Notes app, the sales tool Quip, and the productivity suite Notion.
ChatGPT can interact with these apps or read content from their databases. Previously, it was possible to share screen content in apps like Xcode, TextEdit, VS Code, or even the Terminal, including copy and paste functions. OpenAI has announced plans to integrate with more development environments and editors. These include JetBrains IDEs, various VS Code forks, and BBEdit, which is popular among Apple users.
This access is particularly useful because it allows users to get results faster than entering requests into ChatGPT one by one. Programming with the chatbot’s help becomes easier. Additionally, voice input is supported, including an “Advanced Voice Mode”.
Security concerns with ChatGPT remain. Requests are stored in logs and, depending on the agreement with OpenAI, can be used for training. The “Work with Apps” feature is currently available only to paying customers. This includes subscribers to ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro, and the Team, Enterprise, and Education packages.
Competitors like Anthropic with their Claude chatbot are also working on enabling their chatbots to access computers. Claude’s feature is called “Computer Use” and is in a limited beta phase.
Overall, these developments indicate a shift towards making AI tools more integrated and functional in everyday tasks, enhancing productivity and efficiency for users. As these technologies evolve, they promise to offer more seamless interactions and capabilities across various platforms and applications.
