AI’s Emerging Role in HR: Current Use and Future Potential

AI : AI's Emerging Role in HR: Current Use and Future Potential

Artificial Intelligence (AI) in HR processes is not yet widespread. However, a survey by the industry association Bitkom indicates that AI might already be involved in writing job references. Out of 852 German companies surveyed, 14% are already using AI for this task, and 45% can imagine doing so in the future. This suggests potential for AI in other HR tasks as well.

The greatest potential for AI in HR seems to be in employee training and handling inquiries. Currently, 12% of companies use AI for employee training, and 60% are open to it in the future. A chat function for handling internal HR inquiries is present in only 9% of companies, but 49% find the idea appealing. In contrast, AI’s role in onboarding is limited, with only 11% of companies using it, while 59% do not consider it relevant.

Despite these advancements, some HR areas remain largely human-centric. For example, 69% of companies do not use AI in evaluating employee performance, and 72% do not use it for assessing workload. A competency analysis supported by AI, leading to personal and training planning, is only common in 4% of companies, while 31% might consider it. However, 63% have not yet thought about it.

Career counseling is another area where human involvement remains dominant. For 61% of companies, AI is not considered for career advice, although 33% are open to the idea. Currently, only 3% of companies have implemented AI in career counseling.

Overall, AI’s presence in HR processes is growing, but many companies still rely on human expertise for critical tasks. As technology evolves, the balance between AI and human involvement in HR will likely continue to shift.
