Apple’s Ambitious Plans for Siri’s Transformation into a Chatbot with iOS 19

Siri : Apple's Ambitious Plans for Siri's Transformation into a Chatbot with iOS 19

Apple is planning a significant update for Siri with iOS 19, aiming to transform it into a chatbot similar to ChatGPT and Gemini. This development follows the announcement of a major AI initiative for iPhones with iOS 18 in June 2024. However, many promised features are yet to be delivered, and the expansion of Apple Intelligence is expected to continue into iOS 19 and possibly until the announcement of iOS 20.

According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple plans to elevate Siri to the level of a chatbot, allowing users to engage in natural language conversations. This transformation requires extensive restructuring and a new engine, which are not part of iOS 18. Apple is known for preferring its own software and hardware solutions over partnerships, suggesting that the integration with ChatGPT in iOS 18.2 is a temporary measure.

The improvements promised for Siri by 2025 are considered only an initial step. While these upgrades will make daily use of Siri easier, they do not represent the significant overhaul the service needs. Siri’s current infrastructure and AI models are outdated and cannot compete with ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Despite Apple’s efforts to suggest otherwise, Siri is not yet rebuilt for the era of generative AI.

The rollout of new features in iOS 19 is expected to be even slower than with iOS 18. LLM Siri and other functionalities might not appear until the first half of 2026 with iOS 19.4. Although the specifics of additional iOS 19 features are unclear, more customization options are anticipated. iOS 18 introduced greater freedom in home screen design and a revamped control center.

Apple is expected to unveil iOS 19 during the annual WWDC in early June 2025, with the final version typically released in September. The first iPhones to come with the new software will be the iPhone 17 series, including a rumored slim version. However, only a few iPhone models, like the iPhone 15 Pro (Max) and the iPhone 16 family, have the necessary memory and processing power to support Apple Intelligence. Despite this, many older devices are rumored to receive the iOS 19 update.

This update is part of Apple’s ongoing efforts to enhance its AI capabilities and ensure its devices remain competitive in the rapidly evolving tech landscape. Users can expect more advanced features and improvements in user experience as Apple continues to refine its AI technology.
