Google’s Latest Android Update Brings New Features to Pixel Devices and More

Every year, Google introduces new features to Android devices just before Christmas. These features are not limited to the latest Android version 15 but are also available for older devices. Additionally, the first major Android 15 update is available for Pixel devices starting from Pixel 6 and newer, along with updates for the Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Tablet.

The December update from Google expands the capabilities of the new assistant, Gemini. With the Spotify extension, users can play music from Spotify using voice commands. This feature was already available with Google Assistant. Initially, Gemini lacked basic functions like these, which are now being added gradually to achieve feature parity with Google Assistant.

Gemini also gains access to the “Utilities Extension,” allowing the chatbot to perform more actions, such as making calls, sending emails, and changing phone settings. Furthermore, Gemini is set to provide more detailed and helpful image descriptions in the Lookout app. Users simply need to capture, upload, or open a photo in the app, and the caption will be read aloud in a natural-sounding voice. This feature is currently available worldwide in English only.

Google promises improved document scans with the update, optimizing scanned files stored in Google Drive. Additionally, images and videos can now be easily shared via Quick-Share (formerly Nearby Share) using a QR code. New sticker combinations can be created in the Emoji Kitchen on Google’s Gboard app, with the new pizza emoji being highlighted among other emoji mashups.

For Pixel devices, Google introduces several enhancements with the Android 15 QPR1 update. The theft protection feature is enhanced, requiring face or fingerprint authentication before making changes to sensitive settings when in a new location. Google’s free VPN service is now available on the Pixel Tablet, ensuring sensitive data remains encrypted even on public Wi-Fi. The Pixel Tablet’s lock screen now provides quick access to key controls, allowing users to reach widgets for smart home devices, timers, music, and more with a swipe to the right.

The Now Playing feature on the Google Pixel Tablet now includes album cover displays. The Recorder app receives an update to automatically reduce background noise and distractions, making recordings clearer. This requires the “Clear Voice” feature to be activated in the app.

The Pixel Watch 3 introduces a new feature: heart rate loss detection. This feature is now available in Germany and Portugal. It can detect when a person’s heart stops suddenly due to cardiac arrest, poisoning, or respiratory arrest. If the user does not respond to the alert, the smartwatch will call emergency services.

Additionally, fall detection is now available for all Pixel Watch models, and car crash detection is available for Pixel smartphones and the Pixel Watch 2 and 3. These new features are being gradually rolled out to all compatible devices. Google provides an overview of which features are available on each Pixel device. Most features are delivered through Google Play services for smartphones from other manufacturers, without requiring an Android update.

This update highlights Google’s ongoing commitment to enhancing the functionality and security of its devices, ensuring users have access to the latest innovations without needing the most recent hardware.
