Google’s New AI Image Generator Enhances Google Docs with Custom Visuals

Google has introduced a new image generator based on its Gemini AI technology. According to The Verge, this tool allows users to create and insert visual elements directly into Google Docs. With this move, Google follows in the footsteps of Microsoft, which has been enabling AI-based creation of clipart in its Office products for some time.

The new tool offers numerous possibilities and is available for paid Workspace accounts with add-ons such as Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education, Education Premium, or Google One AI Premium. Users who have access to this new feature can find it under the “Insert” tab in the “Image” menu. Here, users can input a prompt describing what the AI-generated element should display.

The style in which the desired image is created does not need to be specified in the prompt. Instead, a dropdown menu is available to simplify the design process. Users can choose from various styles such as “Photography” or “Sketch.” Additionally, users can select between square, horizontal, or vertical aspect ratios to ensure the AI-generated image fits the intended format, whether it be a flyer, a brochure, or a menu. Title pages that span an entire document can also be created this way.

The new image generator is based on Imagen 3, the latest version introduced by Google in August. Compared to previous models, Imagen 3 is expected to deliver significantly higher quality results with more details, better lighting, and fewer distracting elements.

The tool for creating AI images will be gradually rolled out to “Rapid Release” accounts, a process that may take up to 15 days. For regular Workspace accounts, the feature will begin rolling out starting December 16.
