OpenAI has announced a series of daily AI announcements starting December 5th. According to media reports, the developers of ChatGPT plan to release the long-awaited text-to-video AI tool called Sora and a new reasoning model.

The announcement for the multi-day event, dubbed “Shipmas,” with live streams was made through OpenAI’s X account. It stated: “12 days, 12 live streams. A series of new things, big and small. 12 days of OpenAI start tomorrow.” This public announcement was complemented by hints from OpenAI employees who also pointed out the new introductions on social media. Apparently, the announcements are to be made in the style of an advent calendar.

The journey to Sora has been long. The online tech news portal The Verge cites unnamed sources at OpenAI, indicating that the video tool Sora is part of these announcements. Initial short videos created with Sora were already visible after its introduction in February 2024. A week ago, artists provided access to the video AI for several hours for everyone to protest against OpenAI’s company policy. Originally, only selected artists were supposed to have access to test the AI. A release of Sora would align with previous announcements that Sora should be available by the end of the year. Previously, Google had already released its video AI model, Veo.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated at a conference in New York that ChatGPT currently has over 300 million users who use the AI chatbot at least once a week. This is a significant increase, as in August, ChatGPT reported having 200 million weekly users. ChatGPT now processes a billion messages per day, according to Altman.

Among the smaller announcements could be the activation of a Santa Claus voice in ChatGPT’s voice output.
